TREATING CHRONIC DISEASE : Homeopathic Therapeutics
LIKE CURES LIKE
The basic tenet of Homeopathy is the Law of Similars - Similia Similibus Curantur or Like cures like. If a substance is capable of causing as set of symptoms when given in large quantities, it will cure a patient exhibiting the same or similar symptoms if given in minute quantities.
In modern conventional medicine, medicine is prescribed and applied in direct opposition of the symptom. This is why each grouping of medicine is named as it is in conventional medicine - ANTIbiotics, ANTIinflammatories, ANTIseptics, ANTIneoplastics, ANTIpyretics, ANTIemetics, ANTI-this and ANTI-that.
How could there be two more different approaches to medical care? Let's look at the body's response to medicine and to each medical approach in turn and see which approach is more rational.
When a medicine is given to a patient (regardless of species, regardless of symptom, regardless of medicine), there is a biphasic response. The first phase is the primary effect of the medicine - the chemical/physical manipulation of the body by the medicine. As the primary medicinal effect wanes, the body produces a counter reaction or the secondary medicinal effect which is in direct opposition to the primary effect.
This biphasic effect is noted on the warnings of some conventional medicines - expect a transient stuffiness when discontinuing the use of this nose spray, expect a transient redness of the eyes when discontinuing the use of these eye drops, expect to get really sleepy when the caffeine buzz wears off,……
This biphasic effect is noted but largely ignored in conventional medicine. The reason for this is that conventional medicines are given in such quantity that the primary medicinal effect is long lasting and the dose is repeated often enough to keep the patient under this primary response. This primary medicinal effect is directed in opposition of the symptom and overwhelms the body's ability to counter-respond because of the massiveness of the dose. The large doses manipulate the body's response beyond its ability to make a visible secondary response, except as noted above with some of the milder conventional medicines or as an individual response from a truly vital patient.
In conventional medicine, if the counter-response is noted it is often confused with a return of the disease and higher doses of medicine are given to keep the symptoms at bay.
In conventional medicine, the symptom makes the diagnosis and the diagnosis is the disease so if we can make the symptom disappear we have destroyed the disease. That is the therapeutic basis of reductionist conventional medicine - a basis of conflict which ignores the health of the patient while focusing on the diagnosis.
Homeopathy applies its medicine in the opposite direction from conventional medicine. In Homeopathy a medicine is used if it is capable of producing similar symptoms as the patient is exhibiting. It is also given in minute quantities. The rationale here is that the minute quantity will temporarily enhance the patient's "disease" by pushing the body more into the symptom and in doing so will supplant the naturally occurring disease through a competitive binding situation. This primary medicinal effect mimics the disease display but is short lived due to the minute volume of medicine given. Then, when the short-lived primary medicinal effect is finished, the body counter-responds with the secondary medicinal affect which is directly opposite the symptoms of the medicine and the disease.
With this approach we are using the body's natural response to counteract the symptoms of the patient's disease or disharmony, not relying on the artificial manipulations of the chemical power of the medicine.
As a way of experimenting with the body's counter-response, place your hand in a bucket of ice water. The primary effect of the ice water is to numb the hand, to make it cold and blue. Now remove you hand from the water. The body counter-responds to the cold by making the hand red and hot, and giving the sensation of burning.
The body has the same response to both conventional and Homeopathic medicines but the application and the outcome of the medications are totally different.
The body's response is always to oppose manipulative forces. Homeopathy capitalizes on this effect to bring true and lasting cure to its patients through the application of the Law of Similars.
